New Year's Dive (Nieujaarsduik)

New Year's Dive is a huge tradition in Holland.  Tyson attended one year while he was on his mission and watched as thousands of crazy people "dived" into the ocean at the strike of Noon on New Year's Day.  Of course, as a missionary, Tyson could not participate but it was on his bucket list to do someday!  So here we are on New Year's Day 2011, cheering Tyson on as he FROZE but had a blast participating in the New Year's Dive.  (Note : Water temp was 4 degrees Celsius (37 F) and Air Temp was 4 degrees Celsius!!  Tyson is one crazy kid...but we were SO PROUD and had a blast watching him!)
Smiling and sporting our UNOX beanies on the beach.  (Unox is a brand of soup in Holland...kind of like Campbell's in America.  They sponsor the New Year's Dive every year and give you a can of soup, Unox hat and gloves, and other stuff as part of your admission into the Beach to watch/participate in the New Year's Dive!  Tyson was so excited that we all got one...so we had to get a picture taken of us wearing them together!!
Wishing Daddy good luck as we walked to the Beach before the Dive!  (Tyson looks a bit nervous...in his mind he is saying "Do you ever get butterfly's when you jump into the water?!")   Ha ha ha, A Smith Family joke!
This is a great shot at just how many people come out to this event...it was so packed with people!
All the crazy people getting stripped down into their swim suits on the beach to jump in!
So I tried to follow Tyson as he ran down into the water, but I had Hannah in the bjorn and couldn't keep up with him, so I got down to the water just as Tyson was running out!  I told him that he better go jump back in so I could take a picture of him again...but as I was snapping the picture of him, people kept running in front of me, so I MADE him go back in the water two more times before we got some pictures worthy of keeping :)  Needless to say, he was less and less jazzed about being wet and cold with each picture I tried to take!  What a good sport!!  Good thing Tyson LOVES water!
"Yes, honey, please take the picture...I can't feel my legs anymore!"
These were some swim shorts that were given out for free on the beach.  Tyson changed into them after he dove into the water and then we noticed that it wasn't just a heart printed on the swim suit....look closer...yes, it is a bum!!  Only in Europe do you run into things like this!  My Dad decided not to get one to match Tyson :)  (The "I Love Water" company giving these swim suits is a Bidet company, hence the bum.)
We spent a few hours at the beach and of course, the girls wanted to jump right in the water with Tyson.  They didn't realize how cold it was though...so we distracted them by finding sea shells!

On the way back to the car from the beach, we made this activity perfect by eating some yummy Frites with mayonnaise and peanut sauce!  (the last time I ate these, I was pregnant with Alissa and not feeling well, so they tasted much much better this time!)
